Scientists from the Center of New Technologies at the University of Warsaw (UW) have grown a new strain of extremophilic microalgae. It can potentially be used in the fuel, pharmaceutical and environmental industries, as well as in fundamental research – genetics, biology and cell evolution.

The unique properties of the new red algae strain grown at the University of Warsaw may be used in various areas of the economy. Algae can be a rich and inexpensive source of large amounts of biomass for the production of biofuels. Biomass can also potentially serve as a natural source of hydrogen fuel. Krasnorost will also prove useful in purifying water environments and sewage from heavy metal compounds.

The University of Warsaw emphasized that it can also be used in the pharmaceutical industry, which develops drugs based on the mass production of selected proteins with a medium with a high content of sulphates, nitrates and phosphates – for example, mRNA-based vaccines.
