Scientists of the Medical University of Warsaw to test new treatment for Crohn’s disease in children

The new method of treating young patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease is being tested by scientists of the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW). The project received funding of over PLN 5.5 million from the Medical Research Agency as part of the first competition for the implementation of non-commercial clinical trials.

According to the Medical University of Warsaw, the study will be conducted in three academic hospitals dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of children with Crohn’s disease: in Warsaw, Krakow and Wrocław.

Researchers of the Department of Gastroenterology and Nutrition for Children of the Medical University of Warsaw, under the supervision of Prof. Aleksandra Banaszkiewicz, developed a steroid preparation for the local treatment of inflammatory changes in the esophagus, stomach or duodenum.

Crohn’s disease is inflammatory bowel disease, which is a severe, lifelong disease. It belongs to autoimmune diseases. Its etiology has not been fully explained.
