Researchers from the Anthropology Department of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences will join the preliminary study of the mass grave of the victims of the battle of Kunowice run by Prof. Grzegorz Podruczny – a military historian from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
Kunowice is a small town near Słubice. In the middle of the 18th century, a battle took place there, in which 11,000 soldiers were killed. The Prussian army led by Frederick II and the allied Austrian-Russian army under the command of field marshal Piotr Sałtykow fought against each other.
The battle was described at the beginning of the 20th century, but research run by Prof. Podruczny indicates that German historians have made mistakes, including designating the area on the battle.
– Until now, there was a belief among military historians that in the 18th century hand grenades were not used. But the research conducted in the area where the Battle of Kunowice took place denied that assumption – says Prof. Podruczny.
