Scientists of the Warsaw University of Technology developing innovative concrete

05.01.2021

Scientists from the Warsaw University of Technology (PW) are working on special surface prefabricates that will help in air purification, filtration of rainwater and noise reduction.

Researchers of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology want to achieve the effect of air purification by using a special mixture of photocatalysts, i.e. such compounds that, as a result of the absorption of solar radiation, initiate a chemical reaction or affect the speed of an already occurring reaction.

They are developing a completely new group of photocatalytic cement products made of porous concrete and using the so-called second generation photocatalysts, i.e. also active in the visible light range.

If they are able to combine the traditional properties of porous concrete, i.e. its water permeability and ability to suppress noise, with improved photocatalytic properties, it will be a global innovation. There is no similar product – emphasizes Karol Chilmon, Warsaw University of Technology.
