Scientists of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology create plant growth biostimulants

16.12.2021

Research on plant growth biostimulants is ongoing at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Scientists in the chemical and mechanical departments use algae and magnetic fields to achieve higher yields and reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

On the basis of algae, scientists produce extracts and metal / metal oxide nanoparticles. First, they dry, grind and siev the algae e, and then extract it in an ultrasonic homogenizer. The obtained products stimulate the natural process taking place in plants, their primary task is to increase immunity.

Another method of pre-sowing stimulation is to expose the seeds to physical agents. Before sowing, the seeds are placed in a magnetic or electromagnetic field or are treated with infrared light. In unfavorable conditions of abiotic stress – such as drought or soil contamination with heavy metals – the magnetic field mitigates its effects by increasing the number of antioxidants.
