Dr Sergey Kovalev, biophysicist, defender of human rights and political activist, will receive the title of doctor honoris causa of the University of Warsaw.
Sergey Kovalov participated in the creation of the first group in the Soviet Union, which protested against the violation of freedom. In the 1970s, he was sentenced to seven years of prison and three years of exile for activities against the communist authorities of the Soviet Union. He was the chairman of the Human Rights Committee in Russia in the early 1990s. In 2009, President Lech Kaczyński awarded Sergey Kovalev the Great Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
The ceremony of awarding the title for Kovalev will take place on March 14 at 12 in the Senate Hall of the Kazimierzowski Palace in Warsaw at Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28.
