Scientists of the Medical University of Silesia, the University of Silesia and the National Medicines Institute have developed two new compounds with the potential to be used in antiviral drugs effective in the fight against HIV. Both compounds, the method of their preparation and their application are already patented.

The substances developed by the researchers are based on the structure of betulin and pentacyclic triterpene of natural origin. Compounds from this group show strong characteristics, including anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory features.

The advantage of the proposed solutions is the simplified production process. Scientists used commercially available reagents and used easily available betulin, which can be obtained from birch bark, which is, for example, waste in the production of paper, as the main substrate.
