Students from Elbląg started this year’s last research voyage

03.12.2021

In November, the last research trip of the CREO student research club, operating at the Polytechnic Institute of the State Higher Vocational School (PWSZ) in Elbląg, took place on the Vistula Lagoon. It allowed the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia to collect further data for the REEFBALL project conducted by students.

The aim of REEFBALL is to design an appropriate form that will create an alternative environment for organisms supporting the purification of the waters of the Vistula Lagoon, and at the same time stabilizing the muddy bottom of the basin.

Many years of observations of students and the available literature indicate the potentially great importance of zebra mussels (Dreissen polymorpha) in improving, for example, water transparency.

From 2020, students have taken part in research cruises related to the REEFBALL project. So far, they have performed measurements of the mechanical and physical properties of the sampled soil, as well as of the same polluted soil. Students were interested in the properties of these soils in the case of contamination with crude oil and gasoline, as a potential effect of increased movement of vessels in the Vistula Lagoon.
