Julia Giżewska, Paweł Białas and Dominik Kowalski, students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology, won the Grand Prix International Velux Award 2020. Their project “Light Theater” won in the “Research on natural light” category in the Eastern Europe and the Middle East region.
As the location of the project, students chose one of the few completely dark places in Europe – the Izerski Park of the Dark Sky in Poland. Their idea was to create extensive Land Art, giving visitors the opportunity to observe a fragment of the sky like a show of light. It has a symbolic circle shape, often used in planetariums.
The main goal of the project is to raise awareness of artificial light pollution. Technology turns night into day and disrupts our circadian cycle. People, animals and plants cannot meet the natural need to live in the dark after sunset.
