Students of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology create an installation to produce green energy for homes

22.10.2020

The Student Science Club Płomień, operating at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, is starting works on creating an installation consisting of an electrolyser, photovoltaic panels and a fuel cell. The Club’s members want to use solar energy to produce hydrogen, then store it and use it to produce electricity.

The first element of the installation is an electrolyser, i.e. a device that converts water into hydrogen and oxygen, consisting of a negatively charged cathode, and a positively charged anode. By applying a current to them, they divide particles of water into elements.

Students intend to use photovoltaic panels as a power source in one of the buildings on the main campus of the university. The last element of their apparatus will be a fuel cell, i.e. a system that produces electricity from hydrogen and oxygen. In the future, such a system may be one of the ways in which households obtain electricity.
