Students from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology at the Kraków University of Technology (PK) have won the main prize in the scientific research category in the nationwide “KoKoN” Competition of Scientific Clubs. Their winning project called ‘Small molecules in a big battle – developing compounds with anti-cancer effects’ also received the highest number of votes among Internet users and won in the FUT Favourite category.
The aim of the project ‘Small molecules in a big battle – developing compounds with anticancer activity’ is to develop small-molecule inhibitors that show anticancer activity on breast cancer and colorectal cancer cell lines, and thus substances that could become effective drugs for the previously indicated cancers.
The research group has also focused on obtaining compounds through more environmentally friendly reactions, including reactions supported by microwave radiation and ultrasound.
