Success of the physicists from the Bydgoszcz University of Technology

The paper “Self-Kerr Effect across the Yellow Rydberg Series of Excitons in Cu2O”, co-authored by Prof. Sylwia Zielińska-Raczyńska, Prof. Gerard Czajkowski, Dr David Ziemkiewicz and Dr Karol Karpiński- members of the Photonics and Quantum Engineering research group at the Bydgoszcz University of Technology – has been published in the most prestigious physics journal Physical Review Letter.

The paper provides a complete theoretical and experimental description of the non-linear properties of the interaction with light of Rydberg excitons in copper oxide. These excitons, discovered in 2014, are unusual structures at the intersection of classical and quantum physics.

The published results indicate that these excitons can potentially serve as carriers of quantum information in solid state media, a key step towards the construction of miniaturised quantum gates, the basic building blocks needed for solid state-based quantum computers.
