The relations between freedom, culture and identity were discussed during the 5th Night of Humanities at the University of Wroclaw. Experts discussed on the influence of music on culture-forming and identity processes – on the example of the Polish anthem and the jazz from the 1950s.
The Night of the Humanists is a regular event organized by the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences of the University of Wrocław. The theme of this year’s event was community and personal freedoms, their limitations and dependencies related to socio-historical determinants and cultural norms, patterns and symbols.
Medievalists talked about the importance of Silesia in the politics of the Central European countries in the 9th and 10th centuries, and about how the “God’s Pure Word” was the mainstay of Silesian rights and freedoms under the Habsburg rule. Audience’s attention was also attracted to the problems of Polish democracy in 1918-1939, as well as the question who in fact triggered the 1989 changes.
