The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland issued a decision granting researcher from the biology department of the University of Gdańsk a patent for the invention “Genistein for use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease”. Scientists have proved that genistein – a flavonoid found, which can be find in soybeans, has great potential in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

The inventors are the employees of the Department of Molecular Biology, Prof. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, Dr Karolina Pierzynowska, Dr Lidia Gaffke and Dr Magdalena Podlacha as well as employees of the Department of Animal and Human Physiology, Dr Dorota Myślińska and Dr Irena Majkutewicz.

Genistein removes pathogenic proteins that cause damage and death of nerve cells, it also crosses the blood-brain barrier and is safe for patients. Animal behavioral tests ultimately showed that genistein improved their condition, and in some respects, animals treated with this isoflavone were completely indistinguishable from healthy animals.
