Karolina Pierzynowska from the University of Gdańsk won the “Best Poster Award” competition during the 7th Central European Congress of Life Sciences EUROBIOTECH in Krakow.

Congress’s scientific program focused on two areas of biotechnology – ‘Red Biotechnology’ and ‘Green Biotechnology’, i.e. personalized medicine and agrobiotechnology. The subject of the young researcher’s work concerned personalized medicine and was associated with patent applications “Medical use of 5,7-dihydroxy-3- (4-hydroxyphenyl) -4H-1-benzopyran-4-one in the treatment of Huntington’s disease and a pharmaceutically acceptable form of the drug”.

The prize was awarded by Katarzyna Pierzynowska for the innovation of the presented research results and its potential for a broad impact on society, as research conducted by the UG scientific team may revolutionize the treatment of Huntington’s disease, which belongs to genetic neurodegenerative diseases for which no effective medicine has yet been invented.
