University of Medical Sciences in Katowice looking for methods of warming patients in hypothermia

31.12.2018

The University of Medical Sciences in Katowice will implement the project “Assessment of warming efficiency using continuous renal replacement therapy – seeking an effective method of extracorporeal warming of the victims in deep hypothermia”. The research will be financed by the National Science Center as part of the call Miniatura 2.

Effective warming of patients in hypothermia is a basic condition for their survival. In Poland, every year, 300-600 people lose their lives due to hypothermia, often in local hospitals and without access to advanced in vitro warming methods. A large part of these facilities, however, have intensive care units and the possibility of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT – Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy).
The effect of the research is to determine the maximum possibilities of heating patients in severe hypothermia using CRRT devices, determining the optimal heating scheme, as well as reducing the mortality of patients in hypothermia.
