University of Silesia and the City of Katowice applying for the title of the European Capital of Science

02.06.2021

The University of Silesia and the City of Katowice are applying for the title of the European Capital of Science in 2024. The city and the university are negotiating with EuroScience, an organization associating scientists from all over Europe, which awards this title every two years.

– We have passed the first part, i.e. talks in which we were able to present the specificity and uniqueness of the region as an academic region, show how science and education can impact a just transformation of this region, and I think we have managed to show that the great urban organisms of old Europe do not need this title so much – says the rector of the University of Silesia, Prof.  Ryszard Koziołek.

The city and the university are talking about cooperation with the rectors of state universities from Katowice, as well as with the voivodeship marshal and the chairman of the Upper Silesian Metropolis. Soon, a Scientific Council will be established, in which representatives of science and local government will work on the application.
