An international team of researchers is searching for traces of past earthquakes in Uzbekistan. One of the researchers is Dr Krzysztof Gaidzik from the University of Silesia. The results of the research will make it possible to estimate the seismic risk in the area under study and to take measures to protect the most valuable monuments.
“Tracking down traces of historical earthquakes can start with looking at holiday photos posted on the Internet. Before going on a research expedition, we look for any irregularities, deviations, fragments that have been repaired or architectural elements that do not fit into the whole. This is a good start in the case of archaeoseismology, which is what I do”, says the geologist.
The Polish scientist joined a team that already included Dr Christoph Grützner from Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, as well as Prof Makhir Usmanov Turabovn, Dr Tahir Zahidov Kamilovich and Dr Zukhriddin Shukurov Fazliddinovich from the Seismological Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.
