Prof. Janusz Janeczek of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, former rector of the University of Silesia, has been appointed chairman of the Council for Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection at the State Atomic Energy Agency for the third time.
The council’s tasks include giving opinions on draft permits for the construction, commissioning, operation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as on legal acts and organisational and technical recommendations drafted by the president of the State Atomic Energy Agency. In addition, the council can independently put forward initiatives to improve the activities of the nuclear supervision authorities.
Prof. Janeczek is a geologist, specialising in geological aspects of radioactive waste disposal, mineralogy of atmospheric dust and pegmatites. He headed the Department of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Silesia, served as Vice-Chairman of the Regional Conference of Rectors of Academic Universities and Vice-Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities.
