University of Szczecin launching Winter Birds Counting

24.01.2019

The Scientific Circle of Zoology of Vertebrates “Wąsatka” of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Szczecin and the National Society for the Protection of Birds (OTOP) are inviting participants for an ornithological walk as part of Winter Bird Counting. The first walk is planned on Friday, January 25th.

During the walks, the scholars are planning to teach how to recognize birds and discover places where they can be observed. In addition, participants will also learn how to properly help birds in the winter and what to feed them. This year’s campaign is focused on goldfinches.

– During Winter Birds Counting, we observe birds that spend the winter in close company of man, that is in urban gardens and parks. We are counting birds for a minimum one hour and then send the results to the electronic observation centre available on the OTOP website. Numerous school and pre-school teachers who organize class trips can take part in Winter Bird Counting.
