On 1 August, the academic community of the University of Warsaw (UW) will commemorate the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. The ceremony will begin at 12 noon in the courtyard near the Main Gate.

On the 78th anniversary of the historic events, a mural will also be unveiled referring to the participation of the Home Army Combat Group “Krybar” in the battles for the University’s grounds.

On the day of the outbreak of the uprising, 1 August 1944, the 8th Group of the 1st District of the 1st District of the AK Warsaw-Śródmieście made an attempt to retake the UW from the hands of the occupying German forces. This unit was called “Krybar”. On 5 August the grouping was combined with two other units to form the “Krybar” Combat Group. Further attempts to take over the University grounds were made on 23 August and 2 September.

Every year on the campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście, at the plaque commemorating the heroes of these events, the rectors and students of the UW together with the “Krybar” Combat Group of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers organise a memorial ceremony combined with the laying of flowers.
