University of Warsaw to research the archaeological works on the 1 century BC necropolis in northern Mazovia

18.08.2020

Dr Andrzej Maciałowicz of the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw (UW) is analyzing on the results of the archaeological works of the necropolis in Dąbek, which is an example of Przeworsk and Wielbark cultures in northern Mazovia.

The archeological findings of the cemetery in Dąbki will contribute to a better understanding of the processes of shaping and developing cultural patterns of the communities inhabiting this part of Mazovia in the 1 century BC.

The discovered artefacts are important due to the relatively numerous representation of findings from the earliest period of the Przeworsk culture, as well as the unusual features of grave inventories for this group – unexpected wealth of metal elements of women’s clothing (clasps, belt buckles), with an equally surprising total lack of weapons, which should accompany male burials.

The final result of the project will be a bilingual (Polish-English) publication – a monograph on the cemetery. Its electronic version will be available free of charge on the website of the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw.
