University of Wrocław launches the Laboratory of Forensic Biology and Entomology

09.07.2019

Forensic entomologists from the University of Wroclaw, together with colleagues from the Medical University of Wroclaw, created the Laboratory of Forensic Biology and Entomology. The new laboratory will operate in the Department of Biology, Evolution and Conservation of Invertebrates at the University of Wroclaw.

Forensic entomology involves the use of knowledge about insects, about their biology and ecology as part of, investigative and court proceedings. This is an interdisciplinary science using forensic medicine, chemistry (toxicology) and biology (entomology, genetics). Most often, it is associated with the medical-criminal area, in particular with prosecutor’s proceedings.

The newly created laboratory explores the displacement and bionomics of necrophagic species of insects, but also other invertebrates. Its employees deal with preparation of specialist opinions for the purposes of preliminary forensic investigations and lawsuits. They also train their successors.
