23.02.2021

The University of Wrocław will award the highest financial award in Polish science this year. “Heisig Award” in the amount of 200 thousand PLN will be received by a scientist selected by the senates of Polish universities, participating in the Initiative of Excellence Research University.

– We will grant it for the first time in October 2021. At the moment, the senates of 20 Polish universities are debating which candidates to submit. In fact, 200,000 PLN is the highest Polish award for a scientist. The jury highlights that the laureate will be able to spend the money in any way. We do not follow it as we want just to reward the person whose research has an impact on science globally – says the rector of the University of Wrocław, Prof. Przemysław Wiszewski.

Prof. Norbert Heisig is a German physician born in 1933 in Breslau. He combined medical studies with classical philology. In 2000, he retired and started supporting the academic community of the University of Wrocław.
