Virologists from the Institute of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk are working on creating an effective new generation vaccine that protects against hepatitis C and B virus infection. HCV and / or HBV ”.

The hepatitis C virus is a serious medical problem. In about 80 percent of patients, the infection becomes chronic, which may not give any specific symptoms for years. This form of the disease in 20 percent cases lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

The greatest obstacle to designing an effective vaccine is the high genetic variability of HCV. Therefore, an ideal vaccine should induce an immune response against the most conserved fragments of viral proteins.
