Virologists of the Malopolska Center of Biotechnology on SARS-CoV-2 published results of research

05.02.2021

Scientists of the Malopolska Center of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University (MCB UJ) are discussing the latest discoveries related to the molecular biology of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in their work published in “Clinical Microbiology Reviews”.

The Krakow virologists are summarizing the existing data on the replication of this virus in various tissues, both in patients and in ex vivo tissue models.

Although the lungs are thought to be the site of SARS-CoV-2 replication, infected patients often report other symptoms suggesting the problems with the digestive tract, heart, cardiovascular system, kidneys, nervous system, and pancreas. So, is COVID-19 a respiratory disease or a systemic disease?

In search of an answer to this question, the authors of the publication conducted a wide analysis of their own results and the data available in the literature. They made an attempt to explain which organs could potentially be attacked by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In their opinion, virus infection is not limited to the respiratory system, and patients often die of multi-organ failure connected with from COVID-19.
