04.03.2021

Relocation of bison to the area of the Janów Lubelski Forest District and the creation of a free herd are tasks planned under the project “Complex protection of the bison in Poland”, implemented by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) in cooperation with the Białowieża National Park and 25 offices of the State Forests.

The first two bisons, which will form another wild herd of this species in Poland, were brought to the Janów Lubelski Forest Inspectorate on January 19, 2021 from the population in the Borecka Forest under the care of the Borki Forest District and the Żubrowisko reserve in the Kobiór Forest District.

In the following days, further bisons arrived. On January 25, 8 animals stayed in the adaptation farm.

After 5 weeks of adaptation, the herd left the acclimatization farm. The animal keepers can track the bisons through the signal transmitted from their telemetry collars.

The founding stock in Janów Forests will be the beginning of a subpopulation of about 40 individuals.
