Wrocław University of Science and Technology will have the world’s first laboratory with a prototype tool for light-induced electron observation. The unique LightTEM workstation will enable advanced research related to the development of photodynamic therapy or photocatalysis.

“Such a tool is not commercially available. It will be developed in collaboration with a leading manufacturer of electron microscopes and will meet the very specific requirements of the research we intend to conduct in our department. In this way, we will create the world’s first in situ light-induced TEM laboratory”, says Prof Katarzyna Matczyszyn of the university’s chemistry department.

The device will allow to develop imaging studies of the effect of light on antimicrobial substances and the development of photodynamic therapy methods, as well as ultrastructural studies of methods for combating viruses, including coronaviruses. It will be able to be used by various research groups that carry out analyses in this area.
