Maria Urbańska, this year’s graduate of the Faculty of Information Technology and Telecommunications at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, has decided to create a mobile application that will make life easier for deaf people. The programme is to translate a section of Polish Sign Language (PJM) in real time using the camera on the phone.

“At this stage, it is all about basic communication. The application is intended to help in everyday situations, e.g. in a shop, at the post office, at the doctor’s, and, in time, also at the office. The problems that Deaf people have to face on a daily basis are indeed many”, says Urbańska.

In the age of Internet translators, it is already possible to translate most texts from various languages, but such a possibility is not yet available to sign language speakers. The application created by the PWr graduate translates an image into a text or voice message. In the future, Maria Urbańska also plans to develop communication in the other direction. This is a much more difficult task, but very much needed.
