Grzegorz Gomółka from the PhD School of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology was one of 72 young physicists from around the world who were awarded scholarships from the International Association of Optics and Photonics. Only six people from Poland received these scholarships.

The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) has been in existence since 1955. It works for the development of optics and photonics by supporting thematic conferences and publications, as well as facilitating contacts between engineers, scientists, students and company representatives. Over the past five years, SPIE has contributed more than $22 million to these causes.

The laureate is a graduate of the Faculty of Fundamental Technological Problems. He defended his master’s thesis in 2020 and is currently a third-year PhD student in the Fiber Optics Group.

His interests and research work focus on the use of special hollow-core micro-structured fibres and heterodyne detection methods for gas detection.
