Students from Zielona Góra and Gdańsk studying the influence of cosmic radiation on tissue cells

29.05.2018

The Scientific Society of Space Medicine, University of Zielona Góra, in cooperation with the SimLE circle of the Gdańsk University of Technology, carried out the first stratospheric mission as part of the ANTARES project.

The mission was to elevate tissue cells into the stratosphere, where the intensity of cosmic radiation is higher and observe the reactions. During the experiment held in Toruń, the stratospheric balloon with samples reached a height of 24. 657m, where the instruments showed radiation about 12 times bigger than on the Earth’s surface. Students are now conducting sample tests for changes that could be caused by the increased amount of cosmic rays.

The ANTARES project focuses on the processes of carcinogenesis under the influence of cosmic rays. It was the first experiment of a series that the University students plan to conduct in cooperation with the scientific club SimLE Gdansk University of Technology.
