Scientist of the University of Wrocław honored with the Lord Byron Medal

13.07.2021

Prof.  Gościwit Malinowski from the University of Wrocław was honored with the Lord Byron Medal. This Greek decoration is awarded to people who made a special contribution to Greek culture and history on the 200th anniversary of the outbreak of the national uprising.

Prof. Malinowski and Prof. Maria Kalinowska from the University of Warsaw were honored for creating a list of foreigners-Philhellenes, supporters of the cause of the liberation of Greece from Asian rule, fighting in the 1820s on the side of Greece. The researchers established the identity of about 50 Polish Philhellenes, veterans of the Napoleonic army, officers of the Prussian and Russian armies, students and representatives of the Greek diaspora in the Congress Poland.

Poland was one of the strongest centers of Philhellenism. Later, Americans and Brits joined the movement. Its representative was Lord Byron, who died at Missolunghi and became, as an outstanding poet, a romantic symbol of Philhellenism for following generations.
