Polish literature researchers use digital methods to analyze literary texts

27.02.2018

The complete digital bibliographic database of Polish literature in 1939-2002 was created. The project “Polish Literature and Bibliography – a laboratory of knowledge about contemporary Polish culture” is realized by the Digital Humanities Center of the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences from the funds of the National Program for the Development of Humanities.

– Digital humanities expand the research point of view – said Dr. Maciej Maryl from the Digital Humanities Center. The Polish-American Fulbright Commission finances in Stanford Literary Lab his project “Literary breakthrough seen from above. Quantitative history of Polish literature (1989-2000)”.

Polish researchers Dr Maciej Eder and Dr Jan Rybicki have a significant contribution to the development of stylometry, the fastest growing field of digital philology. It involves the quantitative examination of texts to capture the unique characteristics of their authors’ styles. With the big data techniques, new 5,000 bestsellers were analyzed, determining what readers value the most in such works. (Kp)
