At the Silesian University of Technology, the substantive part of the research and teaching project ‘The use of sound in the design of urban spaces, didactics, multimedia and activities in response to intercultural and social challenges’ has been completed.

The aim of the project with Dr Michael Fowler from the Technische Universität Berlin was a preliminary verification of a methodology for the universal design of objects and spaces in the field of sound ecology, towards the identification of features of the sound environment relevant for users with special needs.

Dr Fowler has researched the spatial relationship of sound to architecture and music, including in the design of Japanese gardens. He is interested in techniques for mapping, analysing and designing sound spaces. He has used mathematics and artificial intelligence techniques to represent indeterminate musical spaces in John Cage’s scores, and has explored the ontological dimensions of sound and listening.
