A team of researchers from the Department of Physiology and Biology of Animal Development at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan will be investigating how the breeding of edible insects can be optimised. The researchers from Poznan, together with partners from France and Austria, have secured an international grant from a competition between the National Science Centre and the Joint Programming Initiative network.
The competition is part of the search for alternatives to traditional ways of producing food, which are too costly to the environment in times of climate change. One answer could be to extract protein from insects. Raising insects uses as much as six times less water to produce one gram of protein compared to raising cattle, pigs and poultry.
The project ‘Edible insect farming as an example of sustainable livestock production and a source of packaging systems: new technologies to improve food quality and safety and increase public acceptance’ focuses on water saving and zero waste production.
