AGH University of Science and Technology student examines a modular guitar

Monika Sobolewska, a student of acoustic engineering at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, conducts her master’s thesis research on a modular guitar. The specialist construction is to enable determination of the influence of individual elements of the instrument on its acoustic parameters.

The construction of the modular guitar contains all the traditional elements of the classical guitar. The only difference is to combine the plates with the sides and the fixing of the neck. Instead of gluing the boxes, a toothed clip was used, inspired by the Japanese art of joining wood.

Comprehensive studies of guitars are conducted in the anechoic chamber of the Department of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics at the Krakow University. The properties of the guitar were research by a robot- a project of Mikolaj Wilczyński, a student of automation and robotics. The robot’s task is to stimulate the guitar string in the right position and in a remote way. Thanks to automation, the solutions manage to obtain the proper repetition of the sound, which is the basis for an objective analysis of its parameters.
