The IMMUNO apiary is a new project at the University of Szczecin. As part of it, scientists will carry out educational and environmental activities in addition to research. It will also be possible to get a glimpse of bee life inside the hive.
The IMMUNO apiary was set up in March on the premises of the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Szczecin in Kulice. It housed five hives, which are inhabited by bees of the Buckfast line. This line was artificially created by man by crossing a number of European and African breeds to obtain the most desirable traits for breeding.
The apiary will be used by scientists at the University of Szczecin to conduct research on assessing the immunomodulatory and anticancer capabilities of bee venom. It will also serve as a venue for the educational and environmental activities. Researchers at the Szczecin university have announced that a ‘TV apiary’ will soon be launched – a 24-hour broadcast from inside the hive.
