Bialystok scientists to launch research on the mechanisms of cancer formation

22.04.2020

Dr Sebastian Maciak from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Bialystok (UwB) has begun research in which he is looking for the answer to the question, what organisms are most vulnerable to cancer, what mechanisms can favor its formation and when humans will be able to fight them effectively.

Dr Sebastian Maciak received from the National Science Center almost 450 thousand PLN for the project entitled “Variation in cell size and metabolic rate in the context of the Peto paradox”. The research will be conducted in cooperation with the Medical University of Bialystok in the laboratories of the Department of Evolutionary and Physiological Ecology at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Bialystok.

The research is primarily to determine whether the speed of use energy has a significant impact on the formation of cancerous changes. Scientists will also check what features of our cells can predispose them to the growth or blocking of cancer development.
