Dr Katarzyna Zeman-Wiśniewska from the Institute of Archeology of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University (UKSW) in Warsaw has started a new research project at Erimi Pitharka in Cyprus. The research is carried out in collaboration with archaeologists from Austria and Italy.
The archaeological site is located in the Kouris River valley in Cyprus, one of the most archaeological remains of the island, yet still largely unexplored. Erimi Pitharka was probably the most important center of this region.
The main goal of the project is to identify a key part of the settlement from the Late Bronze Age – an administrative complex related to agricultural, storage and production activities. For other large Late Bronze Age Cypriot sites, copper production and / or long-distance exchange was characteristic. Erimi Pitharka seems to be, above all, an important agricultural center, which was a key aspect of the economy and the basis of life of contemporary societies.
