Chemist from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology receives Prime Minister’s award

02.11.2021

Dr Eng. Jan Zaręba from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Wrocław University of Technology was granted the Prime Minister’s award for his outstanding doctoral dissertation. His research concerns the design and synthesis of a new generation of nanomaterials.

The laureate deals with nonlinear optical properties of coordination polymers. This is advanced research on the use of nonlinear optics for thermometry. The research results will be used in optoelectronics and nanophotonics, including medical diagnostics, e.g. in bioimaging (temperature measurements inside tissues), also in industry, e.g. for measuring the temperature of hard-to-reach mechanical elements.

Dr Zaręba explored the issues related to nonlinear optics during a research internship at the University of Canberra in Australia, and in Germany – at Technische Universitat Munchen and Ruhr Universitat Bochum, where he dealt with the synthesis of porous organometallic networks. He studied their nonlinear optical properties later in Poland.
