10.04.2020

The Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Kraków, the University of Warsaw (UW) and the Warsaw University of Technology (PW) formed a consortium which will jointly conduct archaeological research in Nea Paphos, a site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, where researches have been continued for over 50 years.

The agreement was developed in such a way that the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw will alternately apply for funding for future research. The first grant application in the Opus program of the National Science Center has already been submitted by the newly established scientific consortium, which includes the Jagiellonian University (leader), University of Warsaw and Warsaw University of Technology.

The ancient city of Nea Paphos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus. It was founded in the western part of the island at the end of the 4th or at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Since around 200 BC up to approx. 350 CE served as the island’s capital city. Nea Paphos was added into the UNESCO list, which resulted in the creation of the Archaeological Park. This is a place with a special status, protected from constructing modern buildings and covering the vast area of the ancient city.
