Council of Ministers adopted the Academic Freedom Package

09.07.2021

On July 6, the Council of Ministers adopted a draft amendment to the Act on Higher Education and Science, i.e. Academic Freedom Package. Now the draft will be discussed by the Sejm and then by the Senate.

The main goal of the Academic Freedom Package is to guarantee teachers freedom of teaching, freedom of speech, freedom of scientific research, publication of results, and freedom of academic debate on the basis of ideological pluralism. The proposed legal changes strengthen the academic respect for the constitutional right to freedom of expression of religious, worldview and philosophical beliefs.

The Academic Freedom Package assumes that academic teachers cannot be held responsible for expressing their views.

The amendment obliges the rectors to ensure respect for the freedom of teaching, research and the publication of their results, as well as an academic debate, in line with the principles of world-view pluralism and university regulations.
