Dr Agnieszka Krawczyk-Łebek at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław has won a distinction in the competition for the Prime Minister’s Award. She was distinguished for her doctoral thesis on the synthesis and biotransformation of flavonoids with a methyl group.

In her research, the laureate focused on flavonoids, secondary metabolites of plants with enormous health-promoting potential – having anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Flavonoids combined with a methyl group are characterised by higher metabolic stability, better intestinal absorption and bioavailability, making them attractive compounds in the context of pharmacology.

Dr Krawczyk-Łebek’s work led to the discovery of 32 new flavonoid derivatives, 29 of which had not previously been reported in the literature. This achievement was confirmed by the identification of these compounds using magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
