of the University of Gdańsk want to start a research expedition to Wierszyna – a unique Polish village in Siberia. Enthusiasts of anthropology want to save from the oblivion the history of the village founded in 1911 by voluntary settlers from the Małopolska who emigrated in search of a prosperous life.
Wierszyna is a unique Polish village in Siberia – about two hundred kilometers north of Lake Baikal. Today, about five hundred Poles live in it. For over one hundred years they managed to preserve their native language and customs. Wierszyna inhabitants have a strong sense of cultural and religious identity – they speak and write in Polish and remember songs, stories, fairy tales and even jokes brought by their parents and grandparents from far-away Poland.
Gdańsk students intend to conduct field studies involving conversations with residents, they want to ask them about their daily lives, worries and joys, fears and reflections and plans for the future.
