Gdańsk University of Technology and Intel to launch Thermal imaging – international research

07.02.2020

Gdańsk University of Technology together with Intel are investigating the use of artificial intelligence for the needs of remote medical diagnostics.

The research is an attempt to answer the questions whether thermal images and thermal image sequences are detailed enough to enable recognition of facial features, estimate medical parameters such as respiration frequency, detection of people on the road with poor visibility, etc.

Cooperating teams of scientists decided to check the extent to which faces can be recognized from various thermographic images. To achieve that, they have prepared special artificial intelligence algorithms using deep neural networks. Research results will indicate that the use of artificial intelligence provides great opportunities for facial recognition, and thermal imaging will soon be used in medicine, epidemiology and will support the road safety.
