Gdańsk University of Technology researchers working on a new type of flow-through batteries

29.04.2020

Researchers from the Gdańsk University of Technology together with scientists from the Finnish Aalto University are working on the design of a flow cell battery and new types of electrolytes for use in such batteries.

Redox flow cells play the role of storages for electrical energy, which is converted into chemical energy due to appropriate chemical reactions. The cells are characterized by good efficiency, long life and a universal and very safe system of functioning. More and more companies are interested in their development and production – due to the limitations of commonly used lithium-ion batteries.

The goal of research of Polish and Finnish scientists is reducing the cost of developing a battery and improving the performance of its key components. Currently, they are focusing on the modification of electrodes in order to improve the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the cell and looking for a way to increase the concentration of substances involved in energy conversion.
