Professor Zbigniew Majchrowski from the Institute of Polish Philology at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Gdansk, has been awarded the Prize of the Committee for Research on Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was awarded for the second part of his monograph on the staging of Adam Mickiewicz’s “Dziady” “Gustav’s Crypt”.
In “Gustav’s Crypt”, the author examines “Dziady” in the light of the stagings produced after 1989 until today. Preliminary versions of excerpts from this book, published in magazines (“Dialog”, “Didaskalia”, “Konteksty”) or in collective volumes, have been rewritten and sometimes significantly expanded.
The book is enriched by impressive iconographic material, which includes numerous photographs of performances, but also an extensive and interesting collection of contextual illustrations, including archives, prints, press photographs, stills from films, documentation of exhibitions and artistic actions, and even ‘snapshots’ from social media, almost from the last minute.
