A joint project of scientists from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk won the “Eureka!” organized by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. The competition awards Polish inventions that have the potential to be used in the economy and in production.

This year, the main prize was awarded to “The method of deactivating antibiotics in aqueous solutions”. The innovative method breaks down antibiotics that end up in our rivers and lakes, e.g. through the sewage system or from the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries.

Scientists have constructed a reaction-discharge system with cold atmospheric plasma, working in a flow system for treating wastewater – from various industries – from antibiotics. Thanks to the invention, antibiotics are deactivated, which makes it possible to limit the spread of the phenomenon of multi-drug resistance among pathogenic microorganisms, informs the Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
