The invention of scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń “Method of obtaining graphene doped with heteroatoms, in particular nitrogen, sulfur or boron with the use of gamma radiation” won the gold medal at the XXIV International Archimedes Fair in Moscow.

The solution proposed by Dr Piotr Kamedulski and Prof. Jerzy P. Łukaszewicz enriches directly the carbon matrix. This means that the addition of heteroelements can take place after the production of the carbon material, and not during the process of forming the carbon matrix, which is typical for other enrichment methods.

The proposed material may improve the process of generating electricity in metal-air batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and photovoltaic cells. The high thermal and electrical conductivity of graphene could help replace silicon in electronics in the future, which will enable further miniaturization of electronic equipment.
