Krakow University of Technology working on a prototype of a portable respirator

08.04.2020

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Krakow University of Technology (PK) is working out a prototype of a portable respirator used in the event of natural disasters and epidemics.

The designed ventilator has no moving parts, and its operation consists in supplying respiratory gases (oxygen, air) to an intermediate tank from which they are properly dosed to the patient.

Employees of several PK institutes, as well as students of the Automation and Robotics Scientific Circle and specialists from hospitals dealing with scientific and medical equipment are involved in the works.

Providing the necessity of conducting clinical tests and obtaining appropriate certificates, our respirator prototype will not be able to be used in the coming months – highlights Dr Eng. Krzysztof Wójcik from the Institute of Machine Technology and Production Automation PK, working on this solution. He adds that this situation may change in the conditions of a protracted pandemic.
